Palma.—Needless to say the opposition socialists whose coalition broke down during the former legislature leaving the capital with the best part of no government for the council's final year in power, disagreed.

Former Mayor and leader of the opposition, Aina Calvo, accused Isern of having left the people of Palma down and of having failed to have honoured his election promises. “The mayor promised us more jobs but we have greater unemployment, he promised to freeze taxes but has since increased them and he said he would maintain basic public services - all he's done is put up public transport fares. “He's not living in the real world, he does not know what is really happening on the streets of Palma, all he's doing is placating the Prime Minister and the President of the Balearics,” Calvo claimed.

However, Isern appeared unmoved by the criticism.
Isern said that the city is in a much better state that it was a year ago and claimed that, after a year in charge “we are doing everything we are supposed to. We've introduced an efficient and effective management programme which has enabled us to achieve more than the previous council but with less money. “We have acted responsibly, always in the best interests of the general public and with transparency. “With less money we've created a cleaner city which is safer and better maintained than it was a year ago. What is more, we have breathed new life into the capital with Sunday shopping and a greater cafe culture with more bar and restaurant terraces. As soon as the economy shows signs of recovery, it is well positioned to be the driving force of the Balearic recovery.”
