Palma.—National Police officers have broken up a gang of thieves who made a living stealing from cars used by tourists parked at various key scenic sites around the island, investigating sources confirmed yesterday.

Operation “Roca” had been a carefully launched police strategy of monitoring suspicious activity, keeping a lookout for the way in which thieves worked as a team, following up leads and finally closing in for the arrests.

The thieves most frequently used some kind of device to lift the locks on car doors to force their way into vehicles.
The gang were careful enough to use hired cars to get to the scenic spots each day so that police could not track them down through number plate recognition. The thieves frequently changed the type of hired cars they drove around in to remain undetected.

At random
Robberies were most often carried out in Estellencs, Deya, Banyalbufar, Alcudia, the Port of Pollensa, Escorca and Valldemossa.
The thieves would select any one of these sites at random, not necessarily spending the same amount of time picking out victims at each one.
Police said that some of the gang they arrested already had previous criminal records.
The multiple offenders had been detained on more than one occasion by both the Guardia Civil and the National Police.
