Sa Rápita.—The Mayor of Campos, Sebastià Sagreras had said some time ago that he was going to slap fines on those who parked illegally on the main road to form a “human chain” demonstration at the site of the planned construction, and now he has done so. The first fines were sent out in the past couple of days.

Balearic ecological watchdog GOB who had organised the protest on 29th April has officially complained over the fines claiming they are totally unjust. On the day of the “human chain” demonstration, protesters had been outraged that the Local Police “took advantage” of the situation to impose fines and staged an angry sit-in on the Sa Rápita road.

Margalida Ramis, spokesperson for GOB, said yesterday that people who have had fines imposed on them should similarly reject the local authority action.

Although protesters needed to file their complaints individually, GOB said it would act as a high profile umbrella, publicly rebuffing the Mayor's decision.

In fact the Chief of Police had originally given in to the anger of the demonstrators and said he would rescind the fines the same day, but his authority was later overridden by the Mayor who said he wanted people punished. Meanwhile, the protesters seem to have won a temporary battle of what could end up being a very long war to stop the construction of the luxury hotel near the virgin beach of es Trenc in the municipality of Campos.

The Balearic High Court has agreed to accept a plea by the regional Socialist party (PSIB) that investigations should be made into whether or not the Council of Majorca manipulated regional Territory law to make the building of the hotel legal.
