Palma.—Offers are being received by the Majorcan Transport Board by businesses who want to start trading at a total of four allocated commercial spaces at Palma central station, Board Director Salvador Iriarte confirmed yesterday.

Although he would not be drawn on precisely which companies had sent in offers for renting the premises, Iriarte saw fit to say that the firms represented a wide variety of activities, ranging from bars to a large supermarket chain.

Iriarte said that what had surprised the Transport Board was the number of offers they had received to operate the franchise given that the Balearics and elsewhere is experiencing a time of financial crisis. “At least three offers for each commercial space,” he said.

The Board wants to profit from the rent of spaces at the central station which handles millions of passengers a year through the Majorcan Railway Service which has routes running to Inca, Manacor and Sa Pobla, as well as the regional coach companies which service all outlying areas of the island.

The four premises up for franchise are 1'000, 150, 90 and 80 square metres in size. Rent will range from 6'000 to 2'000 euros a month according to size. The Transport Board has already started a fixed period of time in which applicants who have submitted inadequate or faulty paperwork are able to correct it. Over the coming weeks, commtitees will be meeting to assess the offers.
