The Balearic health service is near collapse with casualty at Son Espases and other hospitals near complete meltdown with reduced staff unable to cope.

The UGT shop steward at Son Espases, Isabel Miralles, said that the severe cuts by the government and a go slow protest by staff has thrown casualty into total chaos.

Yesterday, some 110 people were on the waiting list, when the daily average is just 42 and hospital staff were close to being unable to cope.
There is a go slow protest being carried out by some departments in protest over the government's shake up of the health service but Miralles said that the industrial action was not the cause of yesterday's chaos.

She said that quite simply Son Espases no longer has the capability to cope in the wake of the austerity measures introduced by the Balearic government. The Simebal medical union said that all doctors and nurses on duty are working flat out and trying to make the most of the situation but it is gradually getting out of hand with a lack of beds, the number of which has been cut for the summer, and lack of wheelchairs.
