Costitx.— Faced with a cash flow crisis, the council was left with no option but to make cuts in some non-essential services, the Mayor of Costitx Antoni Sales said. “We've managed to save 150'000 euros.” The area of municipal activity which has most been affected by the cuts (65%) is the local festival budget. “Previously we'd spend 100'000 euros a year on important festivals in Costitx but now we've reduced that figure to just 40'000 euros,” the Mayor said.

He furthered however, that there would be no decline in the quality of spectacle and celebration. “It's just a question of using what the Council already has in its possession such as sound equipment.” Another way of saving, he suggested, would be to use local musical artists instead of contracting big names from the mainland or Palma.
But it's not just the festival sector which will be feeling the pinch. Sales said that the council has changed the telephone and electricity companies they use and that now energy saving bulbs are being used in public lighting.

He added that the three annual municipal road cleaning sessions are now going to be reduced to just one or two, according to need.
Sales claimed that in the meantime, the salaries of Costitx councillors has been cut in half and that financial help to local associations has been substituted by the provision of materials or labour.
