Palma.—The new Director of the Balearic Meteorological centre, Maria Jose Guerrero said yesterday that this summer, which officially started in the early hours of this morning, is going to slightly hotter and longer than usual.

Summer kicked off at 1.09am and Guerrero said yesterday that the long hot summer is going to come on the back of a Spring which has also been warmer and drier than usual.

Guerrero pointed out that back in April, record highs of 33ºC and 36.8ºC were recorded in Sa Pobla and Pollensa respectively.
She also warned that the next few days, and nights, are going to particularly hot.
On average, temperatures are going to be one to two degrees higher than usual while rainfall will be minimal.
She explained that the average summer temperatures in the past have been around 25ºC with maximums of around 30ºC and minimums of 20ºC overnight.
However, all that is going to change this summer.
The reason, Guerrero said, is not climate change and in fact meteorologists across the world are busy trying to work out why summers are getting hotter year on year.

Guerrero said that we have already suffered the first ‘mini heat wave' of the summer.
On Tuesday night, the temperatures reached as high as 33ºC in Calvia.
This was due to a mass of hot air coming from North Africa and that continued to blow across the Balearics yesterday making it feel hotter than it actually was.

The next few days will feel slightly more comfortable than the start of this week but brace yourselves for some very hot weather over the coming months.
