Palma.—With hospitals across the region nearing meltdown and casualty wings unable to cope with the rising waiting lists because of the bed and staff cuts made by the Balearic government as part of its austerity measures, all of the unions yesterday repeated their calls for the regional Minister for Health, Carmen Castro, to quit.

Apart from the plans to close two hospitals here in Majorca, measures to reduce hospital beds over the summer and increase hospital staff's working hours under already extremely stressful and demanding conditions, unions maintain that Castro has lost control of the situation and has no option but to go.

Over recent months, more and more senior medical staff have resigned in protest over the poor working conditions in which they are having to operate and yesterday, the chaos in casualty wings in the Balearics' main hospitals continued. Shop stewards are also demanding face-to-face talks with Castro to try and reach some form of acceptable agreement - they claim that Castro is ignoring them and that they have to rely on the media to find out what is going on.

Yesterday, Castro threw the ball back in the hands of the unions, giving them 48 hours to come up with a solution.
However, they consider it the job of Castro to resolve the chaotic situation or go if she cannot.
