Madrid/Palma.—The 12'028 foreign workers with job contracts in May confirmed that there were 18.9 percent more non-nationals employed in the Balearics than during the previous month of April, the Ministry of Employment and Social Security reported yesterday.

The month-on-month surge in jobs, the highest in the country, has been attributed to the tourist season and the need for seasonal workers in agriculture.

But when year-on-year comparisons are made, said the Central Government report, there were 3.33% less foreigners employed in the Balearics in May this year than during the same month in 2011. This means 2'608 officially employed foreigners didn't have their contracts renewed last month. Of the total number of foreigners employed in the Balearics last month, 38'429 came from outside the European Union and 37'191 from member states.

By sector, hostelry was by far the largest employer of foreigners in May this year, 25'219 including those who are self-employed, followed by 8'387 with jobs in Construction. The number of people signed up to Social Security in the Balearics represents 4.35% of all contributors in the country.

At a national level, there were 31'264 people who were given jobs last month, 1.8 percent more than those who were employed in the previous month of April. The number of foreigners with jobs in Spain now totals 1'739'834.

There have now been three consecutive months when the number of foreigners employed has been rising, which follows eight months in a row of decline.
But the year-on-year figure - from May 2011 to May 2012 - shows that there are now 5.61 percent less foreigners employed in Spain.
