Palma.—Captains of the British travel industry have been telling the Bulletin for weeks now that the British will eventually tire of the awful weather and wake up to the strength of the Pound and start booking their summer holidays and this week, Britain has shunned the government's attempt to get them to holiday in the UK and bookings have risen sharply.

According to the latest market research, one in five Britons will be going abroad during the Games and some on line travel agents have reported near 200 per cent increases in bookings with destinations like the Balearics and Turkey proving the most popular.

Abta, the Association of British Travel Agents has also confirmed that some 30 percent of the country will be going on an overseas holiday during the Games with London being very much a no-go zone because hotel rates have been increased four or five fold in many cases.

And, after such a long lull since Easter, hoteliers across the Eurozone, but as the Bulletin reported last month, especially here in Majorca, have slashed the price of package holidays during the games.

According to industry sources, the prices of package holidays during the Olympics here in Majorca have been cut by over 60 percent.
British Airways did try and hit back yesterday with its “Don't Fly. Support Team GB and ParalympicsGB” campaign to try and encourage Britons to remain in the UK during the games.
