Palma.—Socialist MP Antoni Diéguez yesterday asked José Ramón Bauzá for a change of government “as soon as possible” as a fresh approach to tackling the problems facing the Balearic Islands has become “urgent”.

Diéguez said that the Partido Popular government had burnt itself out with its own rhetoric. He said at a press conference that the “biggest problem” of government lies in the Health ministry, claiming that “everyone knows” that its Minister Carmen Castro is “only provisional” and that shortly “she won't be in office.” Diéguez said that an “impasse” had been reached because the Partido Popular government “weren't getting anywhere.” “We need another government urgently which functions at least a bit better than the present one,” Diéguez said, alluding to threatened strikes and ongoing protests related to government cuts in all sectors, particularly Health and Education.

He said that the strike in the hostelry sector, planned for 20th July in the middle of the high tourist season is a serious threat to the viability of the Balearics as a “save haven” holiday destination. “Where is Tourism Minister Carlos Delgado?” asked Diéguez. “He appears to be doing nothing to solve the conflict.” Diéguez claimed that there was no one in the present Partido Popular government who was capable of solving the Balearics' ills. “Even President Bauzá believes his government has failed,” said Diéguez.

Ex Socialist Health minister Vicenç Thomás said that the level of ill feeling between health workers and the regional government has never been so bad. ““Everything is ruled by the Economy ministry,” he said.
