A total of 126 homes in the Balearics are on offer as part of a holiday home swop scheme, increasingly attractive to Spaniards wanting a holiday but not accommodation costs.

Palma.—Violeta Diaz, the director of holiday home exchange website intercambiocases.com in Spain, confirmed yesterday that this year there will be around 4'000 exchanges between Spaniards and people from more than 140 countries around the world., a 15 percent increase compared to 2011.

The website which promotes holiday home exchange under the title of “Feel at home in any part of he world” has become a meeting point for those who want to have an overseas holiday on a budget, and as a shop window which displays the properties contributors offer.

Since a version of the web page was created in Castillian Spanish in 2006, Spain has become the country of the world which logs the most exchanges a year after France. Catalonia, Valencia, Andalucia and Madrid are the regions which have the most holiday homes registered with the website.

Diaz said that normally, such exchanges are planned well in advance but in April and May this year, a sudden upturn in interest was registered. “Because of the crisis, people are at a loss to know what to do for a holiday on a budget, so increasingly they wait until the last minute.

Intercambioscases.com claims this approach to holidays was made popular by the 2006 film “The Holiday” starring Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet who resort to the website to arrange a holiday home exchange. Website users are saying the system enables them to have more than one holiday a year.
