Palma.—Drug rehabilitation organisation in the Balearics “Proyecto Hombre” reported yesterday that the number of people needing treatment for heroin consumption and alcoholism has been on the rise since the start of the crisis in 2008..

Giving its annual presentation on the eve of World Day for Tackling Illegal Drug Use, Proyecto Hombre Director Juan Manuel Quetglas and the Association's President Tomeu Català confirmed that the number of people seeking rehabilitation in 2008 was just 4.2% of addicts but by 2011, this figure had risen to 12.5%. The increase prompted Proyecto Hombre to start a separate programme for alcholism “Itaca” with centres in Palma, Inca, Ibiza and Minorca. Quetglas said that alcoholism is frequently suffered by people who take cocaine. Both men cited the economic crisis and unemployment as underlying factors to the increase in addiction. They praised the volunteers working in Proyecto Hombre.
