The Partido Popular (PP) government in the Balearic Islands has been accused by regional Socialist spokesperson Pilar Costa of being the cause of deep social divide and of souring industrial relations to an extent previously unknown in the Islands. Costa's comments came as union representatives in Education and Private Transport sectors prepare for strikes next month, with doctors and hotel workers following hard on their heels.

The Socialist spokesperson attributed the bitterness of the current labour disputes directly to Partido Popular President José Ramón Bauzá, through what she described as a “personal attack” upon the integrity of health workers.

Costa claimed that the economic crisis has “nothing to do” with social and labour conflcit currently being experienced in the Balearics. She said that the government neither “talks nor negotiates with anybody.” Costa said she found the attitude of the Partido Popular very difficult to understand considering the majority of votes which they won in the last regional election.

She claimed that not even the hotel sector is supporting the Balearic government now, particularly as Central Government are proposing putting up VAT in the tourist sector from 8 to 18 percent, a betrayal of the PP election manifesto.
