Madrid/Palma.—The Balearic government said yesterday that in terms of the numbers of jobless pro rata the population, the Balearics was the region of Spain where unemployment figures had fallen the most last month, by 6.3%.

Economy and Statistics Director Teresa Palmer said that in June this year, there were 5'237 less people unemployed in the Balearics than there were in May but in comparison with June in 2011, there are 8.1 percent more people out of work. The figure however is better than for Spain as a whole where the year on-year rise in June was 11.9%.

Back on the dole
The number of registered unemployed in the Islands now stands at 77'277.
But the main unions in the Balearics, including the General Workers union (UGT) and the Workers Commission (CCOO)said yesterday that the fall in unemployment in June merely reflects the fact that the Islands is a region which depends on seasonal business and that when the autumn comes, those who found jobs last month will be back on the dole again.

The UGT attributed the “poor labour market figures” to recent labour reform allegedly favouring employers rather than workers, redundancies in the public sector, austerity measures being introduced by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and regional President José Ramón Bauzá and poor consumer confidence. “Although the Balearics might be having a couple of months of good business, the rest of the year unemployment is worse than other areas of the country,” said the UGT.
