Palma. The Majorcan Federation of Small to Medium-sized Businesses (Pimem) has claimed that the VAT increase deals a savage blow to the self-employed, and to smaller businesses, but favours hypermarkets, large chain stores and department stores, represented by their management association CEOE.
Pimem's President, Jaume Xavier Roselló said he considered that the introduction of an increased VAT rate announced by Tax Minister Cristobal Montoro, contradicts the Partido Popular's general election promise of supporting the smaller business sector.
Roselló accused the Partido Popular (PP) of doing everything they said they were not going to do just a few months after they had won the elections, and of pandering to the CEOE and its big business members.
Roselló said the Balearic government of the setting up of a committee to coordinate government policy towards small businesses inspired little confidence
