Palma.—Following the success of permitting shops along Jaime III, the Borne and neighbouring lanes to open on Sundays and Bank Holidays this year, Palma City Council wants to declare the whole of the centre of the capital ‘an area of importance to tourism' which mean that the commercial heart of the city will be able to remain open all year round.

Retailers have said this week that they benefited greatly from being able to open on weekends and bank holidays from both the residential commercial market and tourists.

However, the opposition left wing parties yesterday expressed their reservations over the plan, adding that extra incentives would need to be offered to small shopkeepers in order to make it viable for them to open.

The large retail chains have had no problem in staying open seven days a week, but the smaller traders have found it tough considering the current crisis.
