Palma.—The accident had happened as a result of the driver who was finally arrested, being three times over the permitted drink-drive limit, and after he tried to take a sharp bend at 100 kpm to escape from police.

Accident investigation sources confirmed that at around 6.20am, a Local Police emergency incident van was driving along Palma's ring road (Ma-20) when it spotted a vehicle making highly irregular manoeuvres.

Officers at first kept their distance, observing the car's movements but it repeatedly zigzagged across the road putting itself and those of other vehicles at serious risk.

Surveillance
The Local Police van moved into position behind the suspect vehicle but when the driver under surveillance noticed he was being followed, far from correcting his behaviour, immediately attempted to flee the scene.

The police van activated its lights and siren and gave chase but the driver took an exit off the ring road towards the Son Hugo swimming pool complex.
When the car reached the long, sharp curve at the foot of the motorway exit, the driver was unable to manoeuvre safely round the bend as he had been driving at 100 kilometres per hour.

Inevitably he crashed against a concrete retaining wall and as a result of the impact, the car overturned trapping the four occupants inside.
Officers acted quickly to free the victims inside the vehicle and to call for help.
Palma's Fire Service, 061 ambulances and the Guardia Civil were quick to arrive on the scene to assist the trapped occupants.
Local Police arrested the driver who proved in a test that he had been driving with three times the amount of permitted alcohol in his system.
The driver was handed over to the Guardia Civil who registered the offence. He was eventually given a conditional discharge. One of the occupants of the car was seriously injured, another less so, but two escaped unhurt.
