Palma.—Construction company Acciona is claiming 470'265 euros a month from the Congress Palace company (Palau de Congressos S.A.) responsible for the completion and management of the conference centre and hotel at the eastern end of the Paseo Marítimo. The works have currently ground to a halt because of lack of funding.

Sebastià Sansó, the President of Palau de Congressos said yesterday that the first month of payments to Acciona will be more costly, at 580'833 euros as there were more workers at the start of the project. Payments for personnel during the first month amounted to 145'284 euros whilst in successive months it fell to 35'000 euros after Acciona made redundancies, leaving the company with just four employees.

The contractor has not asked for money for 203 workers in subcontract companies.
High interest
Sansó said that of the 470'265 euros which Acciona is reclaiming a month, 237'218 euros is for interest on loans which would have to be paid even if the works had not stopped.

The President of the Congress Palace also wanted to leave it clear that 470'265 euros is the sum which is being claimed by the constructor. Sansó said that this figure has to be negotiated and confirmed that the intention of the City Council is to reduce it.

To date no payments have been made but Sansó said he was confident that once the works got underway again, the monthly claim would cease.
