Palma.—Palma waste management and cleaning company Emaya has set up a new underground rubbish collection service in Plaza de Atarazanas in Palma.
There are three containers in the recently introduced system, one for small food and drink packaging, one for glass and one for paper and cardboard. The move by Emaya comes in response to calls by local residents for as many as five underground containers in Plaza de Atarazanas. Collection is from 8-10am and 5-7pm Monday to Sunday. As part of a reshuffle of waste management, at the beginning of next year a dozen or so old-style containers currently situated by the front of the historic La Llonja building off the Paseo Maritimo in Palma will be removed and a set of underground bins installed in Paseo Sagrera.

The containers are able to hold a higher volume of waste than traditional street-based containers. Those designed for paper and cardboard and small food and drink packaging have a capacity of 5'000 litres each, whilst those for glass have room for 3'000 litres.
