Palma.—According to the results of the Study of the Situation of the Catalan Language in 2011, the latest census, a total of 9'856'000 people in Spain and Andorra spoke Catalan.

According to the Vice-president of the Institute for Catalan Studies in Barcelona, Maria Angela Vilallonga, despite the “difficult times” the language is facing politically, the number of people regularly speaking Catalan is rising.

According to the report, 80.9 percent of the population of Catalonia speaks Catalan, 71.5 percent of the population here in the Balearics speak the language and apparently the number is rising fast with more young families preferring to speak Catalan.

58.3 percent of the population of Valencia speak Catalan while 34.5 of the North Catalonia region speak the language as do 79.2 percent of the population in Andorra, where French is also very predominant.

All those who carried out the survey agreed that the current centre right Partido Popular government's “attack” on Catalan has only served to fuel the debate over language and has, in certain areas back fired, with more people speaking the language.

However, they called on all Catalan-speaking regions to keep up the fight to protect the language in the face of the current government's policies.
