Pollensa.—The independent Alternativa party in Pollensa has denounced the local taxi drivers for failing to honour their contracts and provide a minimum service during the low season.

According to the local independent party which is renowned for holding people or organisations to account, according to council bylaws, 15 percent of the taxi fleet should be operating between November and March.

Back in September, Alternative voted against altering the bylaws governing low season taxi services on the grounds that taxi services should not be seasonal because local residents use them as well as holiday makers, obviously of which there are less of in the winter.

According to Alternativa yesterday, on Monday “it was impossible to find a taxi and the taxi firm's telephone had been switched to answer phone.” Alternativa wants the council to provide a full explanation as to what is going on and what action it intends to take in order to ensure that Pollensa has a minimum taxi service this winter.

Spokesperson for the Pollensa Taxi Association, Emilio Gomez, said that taxis were available at ranks in Pollensa and the Port and that the complaints have been made by people who have applied for new licenses but been rejected.
