Palma.—The National Police confirmed yesterday that they have arrested a 42-year-old dangerous criminal in connection with the attempted violent mugging of at least two women in Palma since the start of the month.

The criminal is accused of strangling his victims until they lost consciousness and then robbed them.
Apparently, he first struck assaulting a 19-year-old girl on December 12 in the Es Rafal neighbourhood.
The second attack was caught on CCTV and was carried out just two days later, with the victim being strangled again.
This time, the suspect was wearing a hood and dark glasses when he strangled and robbed a Moroccan woman in calle Capitan Vila.
Concrete image
However, the police managed to secure their first concrete image of their suspect who was already well known to the security services for his long criminal record for robbery and other crimes but police could still not fully identify him.

However, on Wednesday, as a driver pulled up at a red light near the Pere Garau market, the suspect suddenly opened the passenger door and after a minor fracas snatched a sling off the passenger's seat and ran off.

However, the suspect ran straight into the path of two members of the National Police on the beat who arrested the man who was acting very suspiciously.

Once back at the police station, the suspect was identified and police realised that they were dealing with a violent criminal who had recently been released from prison.

Now, the 42-year-old can expect to be returning to jail in the not so distant future.
Keep eyes open
Yesterday, the National Police, which have mounted a special festive security campaign to crackdown on petty crime in the capital with thousands of people out shopping and celebrating, warned the general public to keep their eyes open and their personal belongings secure.

What is more, the police are calling on the general public to report any suspicious behaviour to the police.
