Palma.—This year 70 percent of the country's five million plus unemployed have bought a ticket for tomorrow's El Gordo Christmas draw, the biggest lottery draw in the world.

According to leading market research company Nielsen, some four million of Spain's unemployed - more than ever - have bought at least one lottery ticket this year.

The El Gordo or ‘The Fat One', is the biggest lottery in the world and also one of the oldest, having started in 1812.
2.5 billion euros
While the first prize in 2005 was only three million euros, El Gordo has the biggest prize pool of any lottery across the globe, last year totaling over two billion euros and not only the unemployed are hoping their luck will come up tomorrow morning.

This year, if all of the tickets have been sold, the total amount pay out of prizes would be worth 2.52 billion euros (70% of ticket sales).
The total amount of all prizes of the first category called El Gordo is 720 million euros this year which is distributed among 180 winning tickets (billetes) that win 4 million euros each.

Hence why millions of people suffering from the recession have also decided to take a bit more of a gamble this year in the hope that a good win on the lottery will resolve their problems.

Many players will have opted for lottery ticket numbers ending in five because five has been the last number of the winning El Gordo ticket on 32 occasions, more than any other number.

But, four is also popular having won 27 times as is the number six, a winner on 26 occasions.
