Palma.—Inca will now be closer to Palma thanks to a new high-speed rail link which opens this morning.
The state rail company (SFM) will unveil a new service today which cuts the journey time from Palma to Inca to just 22 minutes. “The train will travel from Palma to Marratxi station in just eight minutes and then another 14 minutes to Inca,” said an SFM spokesperson yesterday. “We intend to go head to head with other road public transport by offering a very fast and effective service,” he said.
Hundreds of people live in Inca but work in Palma and it is hoped that they will abandon their cars in favour of the new train link.
The train network in Majorca continues to be under used despite new rolling stock and relatively cheap fares. So far SFM has been unable to tempt motorists away from their vehicles.

It is hoped that the high speed service will also be good for business attracting more shoppers to Inca especially for its big Thursday market which is hugely popular. Despite the recession Inca has enjoyed a revival over recent years and has become a commuter town for Palma.
