Palma.—This week the President of the Palma Hotel Federation, Javier Vich, said that the Winter stagnation of the tourist industry has crept into the capital this year with a record number hotels closing.

Some have closed for much needed reformation work while others have closed because bookings are poor.
Vich said up until this Winter, Palma's urban hotels have always been open all year “but this year will be the winter with the highest number of beds out of action,” he said. “And January is going to be the month with a record number of hotels in the capital,” he added. “There are numerous reasons, the collapse of domestic tourism, the drop in business trips and conventions, the recession in general and the lack of flights from the end of October until March,” he said.

Vich, whose association represents 48 establishments said that last December, for example, occupancy levels were around 30 percent, this year they have been as low as between 15 and 20 percent and you can not run a hotel at a profit on those kinds of figures,” he added.
