Palma.—However, it appears that the Balearic government and the SFM Majorcan Railway Service has come up with a plan to save some money.
As of January 1, the service which links the city centre with the Son Castello industrial estate and the Balearic University, will only run until 2.30 pm on Saturdays and bank holidays.

The government and the SFM decided not to halt the weekend and bank holiday services completely because some people still use the metro, in particular those who use the Son Oliva football complex on Saturday mornings for their weekly matches.

So, from January 1, the metro will run from Palma to the University every 30 minutes between 7.00 and 14.30 and between 7.15 and 14.45 in the opposite direction.

The shake up in the time table comes as part of general reorganisation of Majorca's rail network to make it as profitable and efficient as possible, such as the introduction of the high speed link between Palma and Inca this week.

SFM Majorcan Railway Service bosses explained yesterday that by reducing the metro service on weekends and bank holidays, an estimated 250'000 euros can be saved every year.

The volume of traffic on weekends and bank holidays is minimal to the overall number of passengers carried by the metro - just seven percent.
So far this year, 1'143, 228 passengers have used the metro compared with a total of 82'207 on weekends and bank holidays.
During the week, that is an average of 4.242 passengers per day, much higher than an average of 800 on Saturdays and 650 on Sundays.
