THE Crown Prosecution Service currently has liaison magistrates operating in Madrid, Rome and Paris.
They are responsible for facilitating and advising on matters concerning mutual legal assistance in trans-national and cross-border crime, representing UK criminal justice and strengthening the effectiveness of prosecutions in partnership with the host national. They also provide a vital link between the host country's Ministry for Justice and the British government. They are also charged with improving working relations between Britain and the host nation by developing new strategies while improving the host nation's understanding of British law and vice versa. Under the present climate the Madrid and London bombings have obviously led to a much closer level of judicial co-operation between Spain and Britain.
