THE Federation of Demons, Devils and Fire Beasts of the Balearic Islands which collaborates at many traditional festivals in the region, has called a protest march for this Saturday in Palma to voice its disapproval of a new European Union directive controlling the use of fireworks. The Federation is not happy about the decree controlling the age of people who are permitted to handle Class 1, 2 and 3 products and also about the distances which need to be kept from lit fireworks. With centuries of fire and firework-based celebrations forming a key part of Balearic tradition, the imposition on practices by a remote governing body has not gone down well with the Demon federation who claim it will destroy the essence of the running with fire events. The protest will start in Plaza España at 11.30am from where it will head to the offices of the Council of Majorca.
