THE drug rehabilitation group, Projecto Hombre, warned in Palma yesterday that the present recession will lead to an increase in cases of alcoholism and drug-taking. “Many people, who have lost their job are going to try and find solace in either drugs or alcohol,” a spokesperson for the group said. “Some feel the need to take drugs or drink alcohol in excess when they are going through personal or work problems.” Projecto Hombre also said that regular drug users, would be forced to turn to cheaper alternatives as the credit crunch starts to bite.
The group said that demand for cocaine (Spain has the highest level of use in the European Union) will fall because it is far too expensive for most. “However, many regular user of cocaine will be forced to turn to robbery and other crimes in an effort to keep up their addiction,” said Projecto Hombre.
