THE Secretary General of the UGT, General Workers' Union, in the Balearics, Lorenzo Bravo, yesterday called for a European-wide general strike in protest over the European Union's new “Pact for the Euro” Over 150 UGT members mounted a protest outside the central government delegation yesterday to voice their opposition to the so-called “Pact for the Euro” which elicited a strong negative reaction from European states both within and outside the euro zone when it was first unveiled by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy last month.

Since being first unveiled, the “Pact for the Euro” has been watered down to include a set of non-binding targets for harmonising policy in a range of areas - from labour markets and retirement ages to debt and corporate taxes, but Spanish union leaders are not impressed.
