THE start of Majorca's annual Mostra de Cuina culinary fair is now only three weeks away, and the 52 participants who are due to take part in the fair's cooking contest were ready for action yesterday in Palma.

It was the 26th consecutive year when contestants had posed for the press prior to an event which is hailed as much by residents as by tourists. This year, the Fair will be held over the long weekends of 21 to 25 April and 28 April to 2 May.

For many years, the Gastronomy Fair had taken place in the exhibition centre on the Polígono Llevant east of Palma near where the new Congress centre and hotel is being built. The structure has now been demolished and plans were for the popular event to be held at the recently built Palma Arena and Velodrome. But last year, the format of the occasion broke with tradition. Instead of taking place under one large roof, restaurants instead catered for the public on their own premises which put the spotlight on the outlying areas of Majorca.

Several gastronomy “routes” were created, encouraging customers to “venture further afield” and taste the island's cookery in its original heartland.
The result proved enormously successful so organisers are planning the same arrangement this year.
The 52 restaurants which have subscribed to the event will be offering at least two menus, one which will be at a price agreed beforehand by all the participants.

The Gastronomy Fair and Cookery Contest are an introduction to fine food and wine at affordable prices. In previous years, visitors and residents have been able to take advantage of discount prices for home-made regional cooking by booking in advance at hours specified by the restaurants.

Another tradition in Palma is the Tapas Fair where visitors can buy cut-price tickets allowing them to sample a specific number of tapas with a drink included at bars subscribing to the event.
