THE four public hospitals in Majorca managed by the Balearic Health Service (IB-Salut) attend to a total of 703'000 people.
Of these, 330'000 come under Son Dureta, 150'000 under Son Llatzer, 128'000 under the Inca hospital, and 95'000 under the Manacor hospital.
These four hospitals have a total of 1'051 beds (876 in Son Dureta, 377 in Son Llatzer, 141 in Inca and 207 in Manacor.
Son Dureta has treated a million people at the islands' hospital centre for facial surgery, post natal treatment, pediatric treatment, pediatric surgery, cardiovascular surgery, plastic surgery, neuro surgery, cancer surgery, thoracic surgery, radiotherapy and immunology.

Majorca is divided into four large health areas, one for each hospital, Son Dureta, Son Llatzer, Manacor and the recently opened Inca hospital.
The Son Dureta sector attends to the population who go to the Primary Attention Centres (EAP) in Esporles/Tramuntana, EAP Andratx, EAP Calvia/Santa Ponsa, and the health centres in Arquitecte Bennassar, Camp Redo, Casa del Mar, S'Escorxador, Sant Agusti, Santa Catalina, Son Cladera, Son Pisa, Son Serra and Valldargent in Palma.

Son Latzer attends to the population who go to the EAPs of Soller/Serra Nord, Muntanya, Marti Serra, Santa Maria, Llumajor/Migjorn, Es Trencadors/Arenal de Llucmajor and the health centres in S'Arenal, Coll d'en Rebassa, Emili Darder, Escola Graduada, Pere Garau, Rafal Nou, Son Ferriol and Son Gotleu in Palma.

Manacor hospital attends to the population who go to the EAPs of Arta/Nuredunna, Capdepera, Son Servera/Llevant, Manacor, Vilafranca, Felanitx, Campos/Xaloc, Llucmajor/Migjorn and the area of Santanyi.

Inca hospital attends to people who go to the EAPs of Pollensa, Alcudia/Safra, Sa Pobla/Torrent de Sant Miquel, Binissalem/Es Raiguer, Sineu/Es Pla and Inca itself.

Clearly this will change when the new Son Dureta hospital opens in Son Espases. The work on this started in February and is expected to take 30 months. The new hospital has been planned to meet the needs of the 4'500 staff who will work in it, with more modern and functional facilities. It will occupy an area of 162'000 square metres, as opposed to the 70'000 square metres occupied by the existing Son Dureta hospital, some 130 percent more.

Among the improvements in comparison with the existing Son Dureta, the new hospital will have all the critical areas of the hospital in the same place, the sugery block, emergency department and the intensive care unit. This will allow the most efficient use of the area for patients and professionals alike.

In total there will be 230 consulting rooms. In addition to this there will be a large increase in the research area, which will go from 800 square metres to 2'130. The new hospital will have two libraries, one for patients and another for the professionals, and three function rooms, and 1'800 parking spaces.
