PALMA
MAGALLUF was in shock yesterday after an argument in the Plaza cafe in the early hours of the morning ended in tragedy.
It appears that some of the members of the touring cricket club, Finedon Dolben from Nottinghamshire, were enjoying a night out on the eve of their first match against the Mallorca Cricket Club when a group decided to move on to the Plaza cafe while some of the younger members of the squad and travelling fans went elsewhere.

According to the Guardia Civil, at about 2am, an argument broke out between a 45-year-old member of the touring group, although last night it had not been confirmed whether he was a member of the cricket team or a travelling fan, and a 42-year-old man inside the nightspot. Guardia Civil sources said that the discussion quickly became violent and the suspect apparently grabbed a bottle, smashed it on the bar and allegedly drove it into the victim's neck cutting his main artery.

The victim staggered out of the bar and collapsed on the pavement outside while the emergency services were called but paramedics sadly failed in their battle to save the 42-year-old father's life.

The suspect was arrested and remained in the custody of the Guardia Civil in Palma yesterday.
All the weekend's cricket was subsequently cancelled.
This is the third year Finedon Dolben Cricket Club, a championship winning cricket team, and its fans have come to Majorca on tour and sources at the cricket club said there has never ever been any trouble before.

They play in the NCL Sterling Premier Division Championship and have won it for the past eight out of nine years and also have had county players in their ranks.

Tributes to the victim were being posted on Facebook throughout the day.
