RAMON Socías, the central government representative to the Balearics, said yesterday that while the juvenile gangs in Palma follow the aesthetics of the Latin gangs found elsehwere in Spain, their development and activities do not have the same worrying degree of violence.

Socías was commenting on last Sunday's joint operation between Local and National Police on the Playa de Palma, in which 125 people suspected of belonging to gangs were asked for identification and two were arrested for carrying knives.

Small quantities of drugs were also confiscated and an investigation has been opened into the premises which were raided, as there were doubts about its licence. Minors had been admitted to the premises, even though alcohol was served there.

He went on to say that the gangs operate in three areas, the Playa de Palma and the Son Oliva and Polígono de Levante parks. Their fights are usually over territory, and there have been no aggressions to third parties.

Socías said that the Local and National Police had been collaborating in controlling gangs of youths since last summer. He added that it was thanks to the pressure brought to bear that they had not developed along the lines of elsewhere in Spain.

ARREST IMMINENT
Socías also reported on the case of the man who is being hunted following attacks on four women in Santa Ponsa.
He said that an arrest was imminent, and it was unlikely that the man has been able to leave by boat or plane because police on duty at ports and the airport have been issued with a detailed description afforded by the victims.
