AT its last full meeting before the local elections on 22nd May, the Balearic government yesterday approved funding for small businesses to become available at the end of this month, spokesperson Joana Barcelo confirmed.

She said that a total of 30 million euros in grants can be applied for by both small and medium-sized businesses, but special consideration will be given to entrepreneurs. With banks reluctant to concede credit at a time of economic crisis, the subsidies are aimed at meeting the specific needs of the smaller business community.

A number of other measures were agreed at yesterday's government meeting, said Barcelo. Amongst them was a programme to be run by the Council of Majorca which aims to create jobs for the long-term unemployed who are also in the lowest income bracket. Split amongst all islands in the Balearics, funding to the tune of 333'333 euros will be provided jointly by the regional government and the Council, confirmed Barcelo.

Other business of regional importance yesterday was the reappointment of Montserrat Casas as the rector of the Balearic University after her re-election by the academic community. The announcement coincided with the government's agreement to create a specialised health science department at the University.

Still within the arena of health matters, a new Ethics Committe has been set up to oversee projects which relate to research in human biology. The new committee replaces the former clinical investigation board which was running for more than 10 years. Barcelo said that the purpose of the restructuring of this watchdog was to guarantee the safety and confidentiality of people who took part in research.

In Education, Barcelo said that the government had given the green light to establish official accreditation for music and dance subjects at regional education centres.
