THE Balearics is to stage a major simulated air crash rescue training operation this Sunday in waters off Ibiza.
Operation Balsar 06 will be co-ordinated by the Air Sea rescue centre in Palma and will require emergency services to locate a stricken plane in the sea, rescue the survivors and then transfer them either by air or sea, to a special emergency medical centre. The operation will involve 801, 802 and 803 air force squadrons from the Canaries and Madrid, Guardia Civil and air sea rescue vessels as well as land-based emergency and security forces and the operation will be monitored by the Spanish and Algerian rescue authorities. Apparently, should an aircraft crash or ditch into the sea while under the control of the tower in Barcelona, the Balearics is responsible for the rescue operation.
