Palma.—The incident happened in the early hours of yesterday morning in Andratx when a 67-year-old man was hit by the van which fled the scene of the accident leaving the man in a serious condition. Yesterday, he was recovering in hospital as the hunt for the driver continued.

According to police and medical sources, the victim was knocked down at 3am some 400 metres away from the Puente de los ojos along the road which runs between Andratx town and the Port.

Fortunately, shortly after the accident, the victim was spotted by a passing taxi driver who stopped and immediately alerted the emergency services.
A number of ambulances rushed to the scene.
Leg injuries
The 67-year-old was conscious but had suffered serious leg injuries and one of the doctors battled for over half-an-hour to stem the bleeding before the victim was stable enough to be taken to hospital.

Apparently, the victim was able to give the police details about what happened but sources close to the investigation said that he was not very coherent and his version of events was a little confused.

Police plan to talk to the victim again once doctors give them the all clear.
The Local Police and the Guardia Civil mounted an immediate search but despite all units being put on alert for a van, they did not know if the driver had headed off in the direction of Palma or somewhere else.

Police continued their search throughout the night and continued at first light yesterday while officers questioned residents in Andratx in the hope that someone may have seen something.
