PALMA
THE Guardia Civil is investigating whether Friday night's motorcycle accident in which two teenagers lost their lives was the consequence of an illegal race.

A 16-year-old and a 17-year-old died after their two motorcycles were involved in a head-on crash about 11pm on the road between Selva and Caimari.
A 15-year-old girl, who was a passenger on one of the bikes, is in Son Dureta Hospital in Palma with multiple brain injuries and a broken leg.
She was operated on yesterday and remains under observation in intensive care.
Ramon Socías, the central Government's representative in the Balearics, said all possible causes of the accident were being investigated, including excessive speed and illegal racing.

Socías pointed out that the collision between the two bikes was head-on.
During illegal races, the bikes generally race parallel with each other.
It is also more common for illegal races to take place during weekend afternoons rather than at night.
However, the area where the accident took place is notorious for illegal racing.
Other well-known areas in Majorca for these types of races are the Pollensa-Lluc road, between Fornalutx crossroads and the viewing point at Ses Barques, and between Estellencs and Banyalbufar. “We have no remedy left to us other than calling for prudence, not to speed and not to drive recklessly, all of which, unfortunately, result in the deaths of young people in the prime of their life,” said Socías.

The Guardia Civil are investigating the scene and calling for witnesses who may be able to help them discover what exactly happened on Friday night.
Socías said that traffic police, supported by a helicopter, were working to detect illegal races every weekend.
However, the racers, added Socías, “when they smell any type of activity” or the presence of the Guardia Civil, warn each other with mobiles and immediately break up the race.
