THE Balearic Public Prosecutor's report for 2006 reveals that 1'309 investigations were started for domestic violence, there were 169 rapid judgements and one case which was heard before a jury.

These statistics confirm the increase in complaints about domestic violence in the Balearics, which put the Balearics among the top regions in Spain for this type of crime.

This was in spite of the fact that in 2005 the number of crime investigations which were started fell by some 16.41 percent on the islands, the biggest decrease in the whole of Spain, according to the State Public Prosecutor's report.

The report explains that these figures do not correspond exactly to the number of crimes, as some are never reported, and others go on to court.
Last year closed with more than 2'400 complaints concerning domestic violence, and the Balearic Institute for Women (IBD) has predicted an increase of 13 percent in comparison with 2005.

The Court statistics for 2005 say that there were 3'262 complaints about domestic violence, which was an average of 33.2 for every 10'000 inhabitants.
This makes the Balearics the region which has the highest number of complaints for this type of crime, in relation to its population.
Every time a woman has died at the hands of her partner, the Women's Lobby, a feminist group, has held demonstrations.
Of the 464 people sentenced to community service on the Balearics in 2006, around 60 percent had been convicted of “slight” domestic violence, while 21.4 percent had been convicted of actual bodily harm, and the rest convicted for threatening behaviour, a spokesman for the Foundation for Support and Rehabilitation said yesterday.
