STAFF REPORTER HOME cooking was the secret of success at Alcudia's Cuttlefish Fair last Sunday, when luncheon menus with food cooked by local fishermen were going for only five euros a head.

At a time of economic crisis, there was no better fare available more cheaply elsewhere so it was hardly surprising that thousands were attracted by the bargain at the town's fourth annual Sipia y Fira Nautica (cuttlefish and boat fair) at the weekend. The event reflects two important industries of the Port of Alcudia - twenty years ago, the first Majorcan Boat Show was the brainchild of Narcis Vilaire, the president of Alcudiamar, but for economic reasons, it was transferred just one year later to Palma.

Sepia, however, is continually being “invented” by local people in Alcudia so apart from more classic paellas made with cuttlefish last Sunday, cooks were coming up with some original recipies such as ensaimada de sepia - a traditional Majorcan pastry with cuttlefish.
