NEWS DESK THE Majorcan Chamber of Commerce is aiming to contribute to all-year-round tourism on the island by promoting discount shopping trips to coincide with the November to May winter season.

Some 450 hotels and tourist accommodation establishments are backing the “Shopping Mallorca” guide, now in its tenth year after its creation in 1999, by offering lower tariffs for visitors during the so-called “low” season. Access to the offer can now be made on-line (www.shoppingmallorca.com) or through the traditional guide brochure.

Chamber of Commerce president, Joan Gual de Torrella, said yesterday that it was very important that visitors are encouraged to patronise the small-to-medium sized businesses on the island all year round, particularly at a time of economic crisis. He said that funding of 225'000 euros has been given to support the “Shopping Mallorca” campaign, provided by the Chamber of Commerce, the Balearic Institute for Tourism (Ibatur), Palma City Council, the regional Ministry for Commerce and local traders.

Some 125'000 guide brochures have been published to give information to tourists in Castillian, Spanish, English and German on the attractions of goods sold by the smaller retailers on the island. There are various strategies in place for distribution, including channelling a large number of them through the tour operators who organise trips to the island. German company Thoms Cook and rival TUI will receive 43'000 of them; 30'000 in English will go to Thomson Holidays and 32'000 in Spanish will be allocated to national tour organisations, Palma airport and local town councils.

Whilst the majority of the guides will provide information on shopping at locations right around the island, 20'000 - in three languages - will focus essentially on the attractions of Palma and will be available from the City Council.
