Palma.—The parliamentary spokesperson for the Partido Popular, Mabel Cabrer, said yesterday that the Balearic government has no intention of waiving the controversial new green taxes which are being introduced.

The government came under fire from the business sector and the opposition again yesterday over the taxes which will be applied to the car rental sector, the packaging industry and large hyper markets - all considered to be big polluters and consumers of natural resources by the local government and therefore must pay the price.

Under attack
The government has even come under attack from overseas, in particular the Association of British Travel Agents which is concerned that holiday makers will be hit by the taxes.

Customers who are due to collect a hire car will have to pay an additional fee of between €3.50 and €9.00 per car rental day.
The amount levied will be dependent on the size of the car hired and is subject to change.
Local hire car providers are currently contesting the proposed changes with the government but, as Cabrer made clear yesterday, there will be no U-turn. The packaging industry is also extremely angry.
