THE Palma city council will dismantle all mobile phone masts installed without the necessary licence, and will order all those which lack an activity permit to cease operations immediately.

This was announced yesterday by Javier Rodrigo de Santos, the deputy mayor in charge of planning. “Our only interest is that the masts should operate legally,” he said, adding that there were 138 requests for a municipal licence, “but we don't know how many of these masts are already functioning.” He went on to explain that it was the State which should inform on the number of installations which do not comply with regulations, as they are responsible for inspections to determine the degree of radio-electric radiation. “What's more,” he went on, “the State telecommunications inspectors should explain why all these masts have been operating without permission.” Part of the blame also lies with the Balearic government, he said, adding that although the city council is last in line when it comes to responsibility “it will not allow the masts to continue operating without a licence.” He added that the council had set the ball rolling and it was now up to the central and regional governments and Council of Majorca to study a joint solution to the problem.
