NEWS DESK THE average bread consumption of people living in the Balearics over the course of 2008 was 10 kilos less than the national average. The figure for the Islands represents a downturn of 4.3 percent on statistics for 2007.

According to a report published yesterday by the Consumer department of the Central Government Environment ministry, people living in La Rioja were those who ate the greatest amount of bread last year with exceptionally high demand from adult only households and from couples with older children.

The Balearics, Valencia and Madrid were the regions which least demanded their “daily bread” in comparison with the rest of Spain. The Consumer department report said that demand for bread dips during the summer and over the Christmas period.

Price variations in bread were at their greatest last year between fresh loaves and varieties which were available in frozen form.
In terms of where bread is purchased, six of every ten kilos of bread were bought in traditional bakers' outlets.
The report indicated however, that in-store bakeries in hyper and supermarkets and discount stores are gaining ground.
With regard to average prices, the cost of bread in supermarkets was above the national average which last year stood at 2.48 euros per kilo.
Other suppliers kept their prices below the average with the exception of hypermarkets where bread costs remained on par with it.
