Palma.—The Balearic government is still coming under fire from at home and abroad over the three new eco taxes it has introduced, despite having pledged not to enforce any new taxes when the Partido Popular won the last elections.

Not only are the opposition and the business community angry over the government's U-turn, they are also concerned about the damage the eco taxes will do to the local economy as they targeted at the car rental sector, the packaging industry and large hyper markets. Bauza told parliament yesterday that his government had to take action. “Reality is what it is and we have to respond to it. What we're not prepared to do is turn and look the other way like previous governments have,” he said.

Socialist leader Francina Armengol slammed Bauza's government as “a total disaster”. “Since you've become president, things have gone from bad to worse -your lies and the way in which you ride rough shod over parliament and the general public,” she added.

Armengol called on Bauza to get a grip of the economy claiming that the Finance Minister, Josep Ignasi Aguilo, “has no idea how he's going to really reactivate the economy.”
