PALMA
WITH the lack of flights continuing to frustrate Britons trying to book a seat to Majorca and at a reasonable price, BA CityFlyer, which is going to begin its new leisure service between London City Airport and Palma next week, is enjoying growing demand.

What was initially going to be a three-flight-per week service when first unveiled back in November, is now going to be a five-flight-per-week operation during the peak summer season. Yesterday, Luke Hayhoe, commercial manager for the wholly owned British Airways subsidiary that will operate the service said: “Demand and interest from the public has been very encouraging. “We've just launched a publicity campaign in the UK, which obviously centres on London and in particular the area around Canary Wharf and the Docklands. But, we're seeing people booking all kinds of flights. “From two-night short stays and business trips, to two-week family holidays, six week stays and we're even taking block bookings. I guess they're from holiday home owners who are planning regular trips down to Majorca this year,” he said. “We're continually reviewing the situation. Like I've mentioned to you before, we have a sixth Saturday flight pending if there's the demand and we're going to be looking at the length of the service at the end of this month. “We may well run into the winter, it all depends on the market demand,” he told the Bulletin.
The first flights to Palma and Ibiza from London City Airport take off on May 21, more or less coinciding with the dates on which the charter airlines and low cost carriers increase their flight schedule between the UK and Majorca.

However, with British Midland having cancelled their daily Heathrow service and BMI Baby scaling back, BA CityFlyer appears to be competing on price and filling the gap in the market for travellers who are tired of the low cost airline experience.
