STAFF REPORTER THE fibre optic network designed to provide broadband facilities, is now not scheduled to come on line until the second half of 2013, a year later than planned, the Council of Minorca said yesterday.

The Council apparently has just 10 days in which to sign a funding agreement for 7 million euros with the Balearic government to begin the construction of the 79-kilometre long network.

Once in place, said the Council, Minorca will have access to variable broadband facilities of between 100 megabytes and 1 gigabyte.
The service will be provided to industrial estates, local town councils, the technology and recycling plant at Alaior, health and education centres.
Private individuals and the island's tourist areas will nevertheless have to wait until other companies decide to invest in widening the broadband facility to the rest of the island.

Marc Pons, the Head of the Council of Minorca said yesterday that the construction of the underground ducts to carry the fibre optic network will be undertaken in two stages, the first on the main branch running between Ciutadella and Mahon. The second stage will consist of building 14 kilometres of ducting to connect the Fornells and Sant Climent branches.

Some of the network being built will be the basic infrastructure that private companies will eventually use to expand the broadband service. The companies will have to buy or rent the capacity from the Council of Minorca.
