THE Foreigners' Office has announced that requests for Residency Permit (Tarjeta de Residente Comunitario) renewal by non-Spanish European Union (EU) or European Economic Space (EES) citizens which were in the pipeline on April 2, will now be processed by the Foreigners' Office under the new Royal Decree 240/2007 of February 16.

As a result of this, the Office said in a communique, that those who have submitted the necessary paperwork to renew their residency permits will receive a letter, indicating the date on which they should go to the office to collect the certificate which replaces the permits.

They will be obliged to present their passport (original and copy) or identity card, plus justification of payment of the charge, the form for which will be enclosed with the letter.

The certificates issued in this way by the Office will be held there until July 1, after which they will be sent to National Police Headquarters.
The process for other citizens who wish to remain in Spain for a period of more than three months must register in the Central Foreigners Register. This must be done in person, at the corresponding Police station, presenting the original and photocopy of passport or identity card, the official request form (which can be downloaded from www.mir.es) and proof that the charge (tasa 790) has been paid.

The certificate will have a maximum validity of five years, or a permanent certificate may be issued for some of the options included in the new legislation.

Those who already have a residency permit will not have to register until the permit expires, when they should request a certificate instead of a renewal.

Non-Spanish EU and EES citizens who do not have a residency permit and wish to continue living in Spain have three months from April 2 in which to register in the Central Register of Foreigners.

In the case of family members who do not belong to the EU, the presentation of their requests should be made in person in the Foreigners Office in the Balearics in the case of residents in Majorca, and in Police headquarters in the cases of Minorca and Ibiza-Formentera.
