REGIONAL Health minister Vicens Thomas said yesterday that he fully supports the use of cannabis by the medical profession for the treatment of patients who are suffering from the secondary effects of chemotherapy.

Opening a conference on the role of Spanish society in Family and Community Medicine, Thomas asserted that if it can be shown that cannabis effectively reduces the symptoms of nausea, vomiting and lack of appetite in patients who were being treated for cancer, there was every reason for doctors to include the drug in post chemotherapy care. He cautioned however, that use of cannabis would have to be sanctioned through the proper Health ministry channels, and that there are in any event, further clinical trials pending to ensure its efficacy. Meanwhile, he pointed to evidence documented in Catalonia that cannabis does indeed relieve secondary suffering.
